I know she is much more mature than the others... when do you really think she will go broody? And you will all have to help me with the broody thing... I have no clue as to what to look for or expect... all I know is at that stage... they are usually sitting on eggs waiting for them to hatch.

I was joking, cause everytime I turn around my Buffs are broody. They'll start laying for a week or so then ... they puff up & turn into the Devil !!! lol Stay broody for weeks on end (on a empty nest) give up& then it starts all over again. Some are easier to break than others.
I call the puffing up "turkey-i-tous", they look like a turkey when walk around, so funny.

Arlee - sorry for not mentioning it sooner... but good luck on the first egg... be patient LOL... easier said then done!

Lurky - She will be 20 weeks this Wednesday... She is the only one that I have that is this developed... I have 1 more that has really started blossoming this week... the other 3 are still taking their time and combs are still small and pinkish color...

IF I have no excitement tomorrow I will try to take a picture of all 5 girls tomorrow and post it here... Seems like the full moon has done it again... spent all day in the hospital with DH's son Cody... he fell (barrel rolled) down cement bleachers at the high school... broke is thumb and wrist, and severly sprained his ankle (I still think it is cracked, but x-rays say its not), messed up his neck, ribs, knee, and is pretty brused and banged up. Yes, he is okay. You should see the poor kid trying to get around with crutches... especially with a cast on. Infact this is the reason I did not throw the egg in his face

I felt sorry for him. Then tonight, we had problems with the brother in law, cops, neighbors... OMG... was it a scene...

Anyways, like I said, IF no excitement.... I still have four other kids LOL.

By the way, can anyone tell me how to deal with a broody????

But, I do have some good news... I finally got DH to agree to put up some more wire to keep them in the coop!!!!!! So, on the first of the month... that is what I intend to do... They will be locked up until they all realize that they need to lay in their boxes!!!!!!! I have a RIR now laying too... in my tomato plants!!! UGGG

Oh I forgot to mention that in my last post... duh!
So are you wanting her to hatch eggs or breaking the broody?
Well if ya let her hatch some just have her a nestbox on the ground in a secure location. She'll get up once a day & poop & eat etc. When it comes time to hatch ya may want to put some food & water close to her.Oh yeah put marbles in the water so the chics don't drown.
I break my broodies by just taking them off the nest several times a day or locking them up in a coop without any nestboxes. The only time I try to break them is when it is so hot out. Other times I just let it run it's course, they give up after awhile.
I have read some folks will put the hen in a wire bottom cage up off the floor with a fan or cool breeze blowing under them.

Bayou - Well, since she just started laying and is in a mixed flock, I really dont see the need to hatch right now... who knows what I will get... I just really do not want her going broody on me constantly! I take all their eggs every morning (none at night yet) So, I know unless there is a nest somewhere that I do not know about, I should not have to worry... I just wanted information on them going broody so I knew what to look for and what to do. Thanks so much for the info... I do appreciate it!
