Hawks are protected birds, but as livestock owners you have the right to protect your stock. That goes for chickens as well and according to law, if an animal (protected or not) is killing your animals you have a right to shoot and kill the predator.

Wow, I have never heard of a hawk pulling the netting off. My entire coop and run area is covered with netting and the hawks circle but stay away. I do live in town though and there are lots of dogs and other animals in the neighborhood. I'm sorry for your loss
