Try contacting a breeder on the AKC website and ask if they have any pet quality pups they would like to sell. Sometimes you'll get lucky. I got my Chesapeake Bay Retriever that way years ago. He had a skin infection and it left scarring so he couldn't be shown. Got a great deal, even with the airfare to fly him here and he has been a wonderful pet. The true benefit is you are getting a well-bred dog.
