Rouen Duck thread

Ooops sorry. I just read my posted post and I see a word that was blocked. It wasn't a curse word but clearly a word that isn't okay here. I'll be sure not to use it again. My 87 year old mother hates that word too. Next time i'll say he "angered" her. So the one in the back is the one that flew last night about 100 feet and at about 40 feet in height. My husband thinks she was flying towards my voice, but I think she was trying to get away from her male paramour. Anyway, here's a pic of them this morning. If I'm wrong about what kind of ducks I have, someone please let me know. I'm under the impression I bought what I was told they were. Thanks!! P.s. I've named her Amelia Duckhart because she flew so well!!
It's hard to say without something to show size comparison.. :)

You're right. I did go back to the feed store where I bought them. The woman said it was probably a mallard, just like you all said here. I asked why it was in the Rouen bin when I purchased the four and she said they get a "lot" from the breeder and tell people it's a mix. I didn't remember that, but I was probably just fawning over how cute they were!!! So, I need to build a bigger home for my babies.

Thanks for your help everyone!! I'm just so glad I learned this while I was there and was able to bring her back to her home.

Ya based off that pool photo I would say mallards. I've noticed they have a little different color than rouens sometimes and those guys are small. My three female rouens are 3 months old and they take up half of a kiddie pool that size or more. Way bigger than yours.

Why would yu need to build a bigger home?

Because mallards are more fit and energetic ducks that can't be easily free ranged without flying away would be my guess. Rouens you can let out every day without having to worry about them relocating themselves.

Rouens can be just as active as Mallards, and are much bigger, so the size pf the home shouldn't need to be changed much at all.

I have a feeling it's because she will no longer be free ranging. I know if it were me I would keep them penned so they couldn't fly away. With rouens you don't have to worry so they can go where they please. We don't free range so our chickens and ducks have very big pens. :)

Sorry but no rouens are not as fit or active as mallards. Mallards can fly long distances and take off straight up into the air from water. A free ranged Rouen does not need as big of a pen as a not free ranged mallard.

A few production rouens- not all- but a few individuals, yes, they are super activez

I have three rouens and I also go to ponds to feed mallards all the time with my daughter. You will never convince me a bird that is unable to fly is as active as one that flies well and a lot. Or that a free ranged bird needs as larg of a pen as a not free ranged one. So how about we just leave it at that.
