Rouen ducklings question.

I think my ducklings started quacking around 5 weeks old, but only sometimes, sometimes they would still peep. It seemed they would only quack if I was not in the room so it took awhile to figure out who had the girl quack, instant quiet if there was a witness!

Maybe I have it all wrong! The duck I thought sounded like a drake 2 days ago started making a really loud quack and sounds just like the one I thought was a female. I'm so confused! @PirateGirl Mine will peep when they see someone, but don't really quack when you're watching them, except for one. She will quack at you if she wants something.

Try separating them. Mine would make alll kinds of noise if they could not see each other!

This is (hopefully) her now. @PirateGirl . I know you can't hear her in this picture but does it look like a female to you? They are all starting to get their "adult" voices and honestly they all sound pretty much the same to me. Except one. It's only quacked once or twice but sounded like a really loud injured sea lion or something? I think they all sound like girls. I also think that's probably just wishful thinking bc that's not how my luck works.

It Is hard to voice sex at first because they will still sometimes make duckling noises and only sometimes make adult duck noises. At 5-6 weeks is when you first will hear the changes. I feel like my KCs (girls) sounded like someone honked one of those horns you put on the handle bars of your bike, my Swedish girls honk when they get upset too, but it is a bit deeper. The sound the drake makes reminds me of a frog.

I'm not sure at what age distinctively male nuptual plumage comes in, but I think when they are this young males and females have the same coloration so you really can't tell by looking at them. @chickens really do you know when males first have distinctive color? My only drake is a Swedish and the males and females look the same as each other all year.

They will have a juvenile molt around 4 months old and will look like Drakes then.

The Drake should have a green bill and Hen a brown bill.
