Rouen Ducks

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow I'm so sorry for the loss of your ducklings. That had to be horrific.

Was it during the day or at night? Our two ducks free range as well as several chickens during the day, but at night, the chickens go to their secure coop and the ducks go to theirs. The ducks' coop is a hutch inside of a dog kennel that's reinforced with 1/2" hardware cloth.

We have two dogs, solar motion lights, and both of us are home most days, so other than bears, the wild animals don't come near, even though the forest is in our backyard.

We're glad you're here!

Hello! Best wishes to growing your duck flock back up. That had to be hard to go through. I hope your new duckies bring you just as much happiness! Good advice above on predator protection; for integration I'd use the see-but can't touch method for a few weeks until the young ones are fairly close to the same size (I am not a duckxpert, though.) We also have a Duck Forum, if you are ever needing more advice there.

Thanks for joining and welcome to BackYard Chickens!

Welcome to BYC. I had a preditor get two of my prize ducks and so I went to TSC and brought 7 of their pens plus a 10 by 10 extra pen to go with them. They are all connected together and have secure roofs over them. I have 26 ducks, all kinds. I do wait for my babies to get fully feathered until I let them in with my older ducks. My two I hatched out from eggs this summer will not get to join until September so that my drakes will not mate them and hurt them. Good luck with your new duckies and I am so sorry for your loss. I know how much that hurts.

So sorry about your losses.
I have 6 foot chain-link that I attached poultry fencing, too, so the ducks don’t stick their head out the holes., but I know things can still dig under or climb over so I have very secure shed that I converted into the duck house by adding a lot of window windows, covered with two layers of hardware cloth for sunset to sunrise time. I also have a lot of obstacles in the duck yard, so Hawks can’t swoop down in. Such as bushes tables, trees, chairs, umbrellas, children’s playhouses, and slides etc.
if you get more ducks, which you should, the ratio best is that each drake has 3-5 hens. View attachment 4182582
theres some strange things going on in that picture...
