Do you want a pet? An egg layer? Meat ducks? There's a lot of different reasons to have ducks.

Welsh Harlequins are great egg layers and really calm ducks. Good pets.

Rouen are pretty decent layers, too, but I don't think they're as calm as the WH.

Which one is your favorite? I don't think you could go wrong with either breed, IMHO.

I would like them for pets and eggs would be a bonus! I don't plan on meat birds. Any breed suggestions? Other than Rouen and welsh harlequin? Or are they the best choices?

I'm not a good one to suggest breeds, I couldn't decide. I got a Welsh Harlequin, a Cayuga, a Khaki Campbell, and a Blue Swedish. They're all really sweet. We got them for eggs, but they make great pets. I mostly got one of each so I could tell them apart.

This is my motley crew. Plus I have two adult Rouen girls who are rescue birds and really don't like people all that much.

The Cayuga. She's a spirited little thing, and doesn't take any nonsense from anyone, not even the big ducks. She's really sweet, too. Next would probably be the Khaki Campbell. She likes me a lot, and her favorite thing to do (besides eat, poop, and play in the mud) is to nibble on my hair.
