So I have three black australorps. All the same age. Two started laying at 6mo. The Third has not and they are now almost 8 mo. Her comb and waddle are not as developed but are now starting too. Anyway one lays darks eggs the other a bit lighter and more pink. Got this one today. Almost white and super rough. Could this be my tardy girl finally laying her first. Or just an anomaly by the other two

Sand paper egg. That must've hurt coming out.

Have pictures of the pullet you say isn't laying yet, plus the other two?

I have three Ausies too. I have had an egg similar to the one shown, but not nearly as rough.

All of mine started around 19-20 weeks. I have one in a partial molt who is not laying, and another I think has hit the pause button, because her comb and wattles look a little paler than they did. The third one gave me a nice egg today.

No electric in the coop, but I found myself eyeballing the distance from the coop to the nearest outlet... Miss those wonderful eggs! I had to buy some.

Egg shells are made calcium carbonate crystals. The uterus of a new layer may have several faults, before the bird holds a consistent and reliable system. What you see with the “sandpaper egg” is a regular shell where the excess calcium (CCC) has been deposited onto the shell.

Here they are Thelma is in 5e back left. She’s the one not laying Ann and Louise are almost every day. Good girls.
