One of my hens started laying very rough eggs. Not like calcium spots its the whole eggs, not a smooth spot on the shell. Was wondering what it could be

Rough eggs can be caused from getting dehydrated, viral or bacterial infections, the hen may be holding the egg over longer in the uterus or even a drastic change in lighting in the coop can make egg shells rough on the outside. Older hens can also lay a lot of strange eggs with funky shells. Hopefully you can figure out why she is doing this an possibly fix the situation.

Welcome to BYC!

They have a contant supply of water, but they haven't been laying regularly cause its been real cold here so that must be why. They are just young hens be a year old in may. Just was worried she could be lacking something.. thank you

Hello

and Welcome To BYC! TwoCrows gave you some good possibilities, The Poultry Site has a nice write up on them, if you only have one hen doing it, it is probably something specific to her / her shell gland, age / heredity seem to be two big contributors http://www.thepoultrysite.com/publications/1/egg-quality-handbook/17/sandpaper-or-rough-shells and www.alltech.com/sites/default/files/alltech-egg-shell-quality-poster.pdf

Great link - sometimes a hen will lay eggs with these irregularities for a bit and then go back to normal production. If your other birds are fine, I would guess that it is just an anomaly with this one hen.

Kelsie2290 I will have to check those sites out. It is jusr the one hen and she always layed normal eggs till it got real cold here and my hens stoped laying good. Then when this hen started laying again tge eggs were real rough so must be from where she wasn't laying for a few days.. thanks so much guys for your imput, greatly appreciated
