My husband mentioned purchasing a rough service light bulb for the coop. He says they're used in barns, etc. for protection from fires if they break. Has anyone heard of these?

Yes.
But unless I'm mistaken, Rough Service shouldn't be used near vapors or combustible materials.
I think Shock / Shatter resistant bulbs do not have that restriction.
I'm not positive on this, better check it out.

You can get a heavy duty fixture to protect the bulb, but they can be expensive.

Good luck,
spot
