I'd say all girls...but the surest way is to wait until they are old enough to lay.

That being said though, I have one SLW that still hasn't laid yet (at over 24 weeks)! She is, however, spending a few minutes each day after the others are done with the nest boxes, "chilling" in the nest boxes...she loves cuddling the fake eggs!

I have been pretty good at guessing my chickens but one bantam blue cochin girl had me guessing for a couple of weeks

Hi All,
I'm brand-new to the forum and to chickens. I have 8 chicks from two hatches on 8/1 and 8/8. They are pairs of Barnevelders, Welsummers, Wheaten Marans and BLRW. I am totally in love with my Wyandottes - they were the most precocious, curious, and affectionate right off the bat and are escape artists extraordinaire. At this point I've got a good idea of the sexes of the other breeds, but the Wyandottes have me completely stumped, just hoping and praying they're girls. They started out bigger than the rest of the flock but have been eclipsed and are now on the small side weight wise. I know there's little chance of identifying the sex of my favorite bird at only 5 weeks, but here's Dottie just in case you want to take a stab at guessing. She's in her frumpy stage but is a dear, dear creature. I love these birds!

Lol, well the three I have are the first chickens I've ever had! "Way back" when the "girls were about 12 weeks old (and still living in the house) we heard one crow attempt, or something that sounded like an attempt at crowing. But, we haven't heard anything like it since! The one chicken we are still waiting on is low chicken on the roost", so I am hoping that is what is causing her to delay so much in her laying. Yesterday she spent about 20 minutes in one of the nest boxes before the other 2 decided they both "needed" the boxes. I am going to get another mini bale of Timothy Hay today and set out a third nest box to see if that helps "move thing along", lol.

I'll only be slightly sad if "she" turns out to be a "he"...as long as he/she stays quiet...I'll keep her/him around, lol. But, since roos are not "legal" in the city...Im still hoping for a girl!

I need a farm so I can have roosters. I haven't heard any crowing attempts so that is a good sign.
