Roundworms???

Today I went out and saw a very recent poo that was full of 3 - 4 in worms. Having cats and dogs, I'm assuming that they are roundworms (I also read that they were not the same). We do not have a close poultry vet, is there something effective to treat these with? Also, I've read where everyone says to be careful of the windpipe when worming. Is it that easy to hit?

If you're pretty sure it's roundworm (google images of roundworms), then you can use wazine (or a similar product) in their water for worming...

Sounds like large roundworms as in the photo. I recommmend dosing your chickens with valbazen liquid cattle/sheep wormer. Administer orally undiluted using a syringe without a needle. It slowly kills all types of worms that chickens can get over several days. Dosage is 1/2cc for standard size, 1/4cc for smaller birds. Reworm them again in 10 days. Jefferslivestock.com carries valbazen if your feed store doesnt. There's a 14 day withdrawal period after last dosing.

I'm absolutely sure that they are roundworms. My question was as how to treat them. After researching this site (that has become 2 nd in importance as a guide as my Bible) I find that opinions vary as much as the products. I've been battling mites for weeks. I took my dog to the vet last week and was told 1. They do not treat poultry, although many of the vets there own them and 2. That sometimes, the poultry needs to be destroyed and the coop burned to get rid of mites. ARE YOU NUTS!!!
I have 5egg laying hens. Giving up the eggs is not an issue. I'd just like happy hens. I do have nearly 30 4mo old chicks and have been waiting to mix them. First the mites, now worms.
Since I'd have to drive an hour to get to a poultry vet (Cornell University, Ithaca, NY) One of the best, I'm going to try to do this on my own but am going to be prepared for the next time.
Finally, I use the deep litter method and after going through a lot of older comments, it seems to go hand in hand. will rethink that one. We do have a Tractor Supply here , I know they carry Wazine and I,ll check for the other. I had hoped to worm for several different worms. I'll let you all know. Week ago I lost a hen and I'm pretty sure this was it. thank you.

I dont recommend wazine anymore since it only gets rid of one type of worm. Additionally wazine is mixed in water for birds to drink within a 24 hour period of time, then disposed.
How do you know if your birds drank the treated water or if they drank enough of it to be effective? Additionally, wormy lethargic sick birds wont drink or will only drink very little treated water. It's best to purchase a wormer that you can give orally, that way you KNOW they got properly wormed.

Just an update. I was not able to get the Valbazen. My selection was very limited. I came home with the Wazine as it would be Thursday before I can travel to the next town for anything different. This experience has taught me to a little more prepared. My parents had chickens and my mother doesn't remember doing anything outside of food and water. 4 mo ago, I brought my hen in and gave her a bath in my bathtub as she was egg bound. She loved it, never knew that either. I ended up losing Sally. The first month I had chickens, I bought them ready to lay, I was sure that (Another Sally) died during the night, it had been 110 that day was due to the heat. Unfortunately, I've had to lose one each time a lesson was learned. sometimes, with our pets we lose perspective. Although, I'm very worried about Pickles, I nearly lost my Mother 10 days ago and she's still very ill.
On Thursday, I'll drive to Addison and try to get the Valbezen but at least I can go back and discuss. It with Mom. This morning, the chickens took to drinking the water with Wazine and I hope that it will help. Pickles was up running around, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Thank you for your responses and Dawg53, you,'re absolutely right. I would never treat my children for something life threatening, by putting it in their drink. Thank you, also. sue

Not to overload you w/info., but Safeguard goat wormer is another one often used for a variety of worms, including roundworms. Dawg knows his stuff, no doubt about it. I've been lucky in only dealing w/worms once, and the Wazine seemed to "fix" things for me, so I won't knock it. I do keep Safeguard on hand just in case though.
Many use Adams Flea/tick spray or Frontline (for cats or dogs) to treat mites, if you're talking feather mites.
I've never tried deep litter method. Many swear by it, but it just grosses me out, thinking of all that manure piling up. You might do a search on "dropping boards" if you're considering going a different route.
We've all "lived and learned" with our birds to different extents. When they're pets, those lessons are hard ones...

Ditto. Safeguard liquid goat wormer is a very good wormer and considerably cheaper than valbazen.

Tractor Supply did have that. Since I put the Wazine in their water yesterday, do I wait 10 days to re worm? Also, I read so much about being careful about administering meds orally, or is that just the obvious. With as many worms as I saw in the poo, I'm surprised that she is still with me today. I can get the other tomorrow, but they are only open while I'm at work and tomorrow is my day off. Thanks again.
