The ones that have spurs are what I call "mutt" chickens. I don't think I've seen any spurs on my purebred hens. I'll see if I can find one a take a picture for you. And yes, I'm 100% sure they're hens, lol.

Okay so I have a little problem all of my royal palms have beards. I have one I'm fairly certain is a Tom, he has the black across his Chest. Out of the other four I know at least one of them is a female because she's the mommy. The mommy did not have a beard last year or at least I didn't know she did so how do I tell the difference? Is it possible that I have four Hens. I got rid of my old tom because I was fairly certain I had at least one tom out of the babies. My old Tom was nasty. Do all royal palm males have the black stripes across their chest and all of the females without the black stripes?

I have three RP hens and one Tom. The youngest hen, now 2 yrs old, has been a great layer. She finished molting about 6 wks ago, gained weight and now has a small beard. So odd- it surprised me. The other two do not have beards.

BTW, my 3 yr old Tom gets really mean too. Especially in the spring breeding season. I handled him a ton as a baby but his instinct to be the boss is very strong. We have had some boxing matches. Going to hatch 2-3 next spring when one of the hens is broody- if I get a young Tom, this guy (Ric Flare) will go in the pot!

If you don't want another human aggressive tom, don't human imprint the poults. The imprinting removes their ability to understand that people aren't turkeys.
