I noticed while doing chores that my Alpha RP turkey is limping. DH and I picked him up and checked him over and the only thing we found and saw was a broken claw/nail... nothing else seemed to be wrong... no broken bones, no bleeding, no open wounds.... Could the nail/claw be causing him to limp??? I do have 3 other turkeys 1 female 2 toms... none of them are bothering him, not picking on him, not fighting him, nothing.... What can I do? Or is there anything I can do? Should I just let him be for now and keep watch?

Thanks in advance for any advice.....Tes

A broken toenail will cause pain, depending on how far back it is broken. I would just watch him for a few days...and keep an eye on that nail, that it doesnt get infected. Is there a way to seperate him, and maybe put some aspirin in his water for pain??

If it was me I would cut the broken part off and cauterize it. I have cauterizing sticks here but speckledhen said you can use hot glue and it works too. You think about how bad an ingrown toenail or broken fingernail hurts until you fix it. OUCH!!

Right, I just did Scout with hotglue. He broke a nail and was limping badly. We cut the broken part and naturally, it refused to stop bleeding. DH took a blowtorch to melt some hotglue really well then sort of dipped the end of the nail in it. Just be careful and only get it on the nail. It worked like a charm.

Thanks for replying.... Okay... the nail is broken only about half way down... it was a clean break... nothing hanging. At this time I can not seperate him he is just too big... I dont have any hotglue.... is there something else I can use? There was no bleeding... when DH gets back I will see if I can get a picture.... OH wait... DD is here... she hates them LOL... maybe if I hold him she will take the picture... funny she is not looking at what I am writing

Oh my goodness... LOL... I should have been taking pics of my daughter.... how in the world can a person be that scared of chickens and turkeys?!?!?! All they wanted was some attention!!! Oh goodness... Oh well, got the pic... here it is.... it does look like it did bleed... he must have done it over night. He was completely fine last night.

That doesn't LOOK too bad. But there may be tissue exposed and when anything touches it it may be hurting him. The only other suggestion I could make in a pinch is a blob of super glue. I am a nurse and that's all that liquid bandages are is super glue. Try that and maybe it will help before any bacteria or infection gets in there.

We usually go for the super glue first, but for some reason, we couldn't get enough of it to come out. The hotglue stick made a much larger blob that sealed off the nail, at least this time. It probably is sore. Scout isn't limping anymore after being glued back together, LOL.
