So last year during the egg swaps that were going on I got some Marans eggs. I managed to hatch a pair (lucky me!). Well the roo is RUMPLESS. He has never had a tail, doesn't even have the whatever-that's-called-thing that the tail feathers attach to.

Is this common?

I would say it is not common at all in Marans. Rumplessness is a mutation of sorts. I have also read that it can also be induced by rough handling of eggs during a particular day in incubation.

Do you have a pic? I bet it looks quite interesting on a Marans.

I've never heard of it in Marans. Not a good plan to breed from him.

I wouldn't breed him if he is. The mutation has been known to be deadly in some other rumpless breeds. That's the last thing you need introduced to the Marans breed. Nip it in the but (no pun intended lol) while you can.

Krys is right...rumplessness is not lethal/deadly. I wouldn't breed it either.

I think the only lethal part is to the other chickens laughin themselves to death at a rumpless chicken.

Why not?
I would try to breed it and see what you get!
If it just makes normal chicks, then STOP!!
(I guess that isnt a good gene to breed into it!?)
Whats wrong with trying to make a rumpless Maran?

I have a few 5 week old BC Marans chicks I think they may be rumpless. Either that or their tails feathers are super slow at coming in.
