I'm going to make a snow free area in my yard by tethering a strong line between two trees, then draping and lashing down a tarp over that rope on both sides at such an angle that snow will slide off it.

That could possibly work very well, if you have 2 trees in the right place in your yard.

And don't get so much snow that it starts caving in at the bottom...
..course you could keep it cleared back.

Have a friend who had a 50 foot long army tent in his yard for storage and stuff. It wasn't easy here in Montana as we can get a good deal of snow, but with a lot of hard work he kept it from caving in. He saved up and was able to put a metal roof over it after a few years.

It was not a tarp over a rope. It was however a tent made of canvas with pitched roof, similar to the tarp plan. It required the snow to be removed after each snow storm as the tarp will also need snow removal. The tarp is not an ideal plan, however, it can work at least for a season or so if the proper time and work is put into it.
