Run floor material

We purchased a material for the flooring of the run & now I'm not sure about it It is now half covered with an all purpose sand. Did we purchase the wrong thing? Please help reassure us or help us with the right products. We researched & thought this was ok to use Now we are second guessing ourselves.

Sand might work well, IF you live in a very arid climate and you like to scoop poop a lot.
As soon as it gets damp it will stink.

We live in an extremely dry climate. California no rain no grass
