Run Ideas?

I hear you about your fear of predators!! I feel the exact same way. We just began our run today. I did use the welded wire on the bottom. When I held it against my skin it felt like it would not hurt on the feet the way hardware cloth would. So I used it for the bottom. I'm thinking I might get a few bags of soil to put over it but not sure. I posted pics in another forum area but I'll post again here. As you'll see by the pics we got the frame up and will do the hardware cloth sides tomorrow and welded wire topping. I'm like you, hoping that's OK. Is it? I figure if something dug underneath they still wouldn't be able to get by that welded wire, right? Well, here's my pics. I'm struggling on how to stabilize the structure that is not attached to the side of our barn. And trying to figure out how to do a door without having to mitre since we don't have that tool. The end we see here is the end I'm struggling with stabilizing. This is a 16' X 8' run. Wanted it bigger but $$. 8' wide (the length of one 2X4X8). And the length is 16' (2 - 2X4X8's). Height is 6'. You can see the welded wire bottom. Should I cover it with soil? Is hay OK to use? Alone or over soil?

This angle lets you see the shaded "inside lean to" part that will be good for winter. The whole run will be available for summer. Also, can see how bottom is not secured to ground. Not sure if or how to do that. Outside wall to right is getting a window tomorrow night.

See the bracket we used under the hight 2X4? Worked great at stabilizing that beam.Pop up door is not available yet, until we finish run.

Love this door lock. Works great. Stall was a horse stall in a former life and this was here.

Have one of these on each corner of the barn. Night Guard. Solar powered predator protector. 15" off the ground and it blinks a red light dusk till dawn. Suppose to be very effective. Got mine at Amazon.

Thanks!
And good luck in NJ with your coop and run. I grew up in Freehold. :)

I have a run that is similar in size to the 100 x 100 pictured above. How high is your fencing?? I think I may a huge newbie mistake by only making mine 4 feet high and 2 of my 8 week olds got out. I spent the afternoon adding another few feet to the top. It doesn't look pretty but wlll have to do until something more permanent is done this weekend. With all the room they have I can't understand why they would think the grass was greener on the other side :(

I can't comment on any of the structural questions you have, I leave all that stuff to my DH! But it sounds like the 2 x 4 welded wire on the bottom would be safe. Anyone else think so? I think I would put something down on top of it, the chicks will scratch and dig it up anyway!

Freehold is only 35 minutes from us! Thanks and good luck with yours too. Keep posting pictures, everyone loves them!!

Thanks! And what a small world.

I put the same welded wire on top of run and it looks to me like just about anything could get in there! Any suggestions out there on how I should handle the top?

I guess it would depend on what you are expecting to come through it... all I have here are foxes, raccoons and skunks so welded wire is plenty.
