Run Is on the Patio!!

I have heart failure and MS. That said, my family decided to keep me from trying to navigate the winter to the cicken coop that next to the door is a good idea. It is, the thing is the ground is, of course, flag stone. I'd like take on what to place on the stone before the hay and seed. I can move dirt from their yard enclosure, which is ground (dirt). They will also have free acces to the yard during the day if they wish.

I know of another person on here who has their run/coop next to the house. I think it’s a great idea.

@Sylvester017 might be able to give you some pointers on having the setup placed nearer to the house.

Hi LadyGuinevere - You will love having close access to your coop. I use both a quad cane & a wheeled walker to get around ~ I'm 80, have scoliosis, arthritis, a bum leg, currently a broken arm, & lots of old age issues. Years ago we planned for our old age to have our coop located next to our sliding glass kitchen door under a roofed concrete patio. Now that we are aged it was good we planned ahead for this.

We let the girls free range the back yard all day & they use the coop only to lay eggs or roost at night. The girls used to have only the back half of the yard as their run but we opened up our people side of the yard w/our 2 raised garden beds so they can come to the sliding door to see us & vice-versa. Messy? Yes, but so fun. A broom, handled-dustpan, hose & barrel trash can are our friend.

We live in the city suburbs, not a farm. We have no dirt or straw on the concrete patio but just sweep up poop or trash from under the coop. We water-hose down the concrete slab when needed. Our hens don't stay penned up all day ~ they free range the yard. We have 3 popup canopies & planted Pomegranate & citrus trees for shade, several large recycled dog houses & benches for hiding in the chicken yard & two roofed patios against the house & one of the patios is a coop area. When it rains the two patios are where the hens hide out. A deer fence separates the chicken yard from the people garden yards.
