K I have 50 ft of fencing and am getting ready to start my new run and retire my old run to the pullets... My question is would you rather have a long run or a wide run ? I don't know if the chickens really care, thinking of 30ft long 10 ft wide , but may do it 25 x25 square ... Just wanting some feedback.

I'm having problems seeing how you'll get the dimensions stated from the length of fencing that you mentioned....are you gonna run this run parallel with the existing run and use a side of the old run for a side of the new run?

The chickens will like a square run better because it will give them more room...

30x10=300 sq ft with 80' perimeter
20x20=400 sq ft with a 80' perimeter
25% more run space for the same amount of fencing and posts.

ETA: 25x25=625 sq ft but would be 100' perimeter

Best wishes,
Ed

For a given length of fence material (like, "a 100 ft roll" or whatever), square(ish) will enclose the largest area and thus give the chickens the most room. For instance a run with a 100 ft perimeter could be 25x25 square, giving 625 sq ft of area; or it could be reallllly long and skinny, 40x10, giving the chickens only 400 sq ft of run.

So from that perspective square is better.

The only exception would be if you want to roof it, in which case a narrower run is easier to engineer a cover for.

Have fun,

Pat

I would say just shy of 20ft... it will be narrow but is only a grow out run it is in panels so i can adjust it from 7ft long up to 20 ftish.. I will have to play with the lay of the land some as my yard is mostly hills.. I have to move everything and set up quickly so just want to have a game plan before hand

We are moving them inot the shade and have a overhang from our coop so i shouldnt need to cover it ... Thanks for the help folks you all are great

I would make it more square-ish more square feet that way. Maybe may the other sides 15-20-15 that would allow for 300 square feet

Just a thought!

In trying to cover part of my run it would have been much easier if I made it 6' across (instead of 10') it would have been easier to cover part!

HMmmm....Intheswamp is giving Geometry lessons.
(Thx, I needed thems.)

No way can 50 ft of fencing give you something that big.

If it's square, each side would measure 12 1/2ft.
12.5 x12.5=156.25 sq ft

If 2 sides are 10 ft long, you've used 20ft out of 50, so the other two sides would each be 15 ft long.
10 x 15=150 sq ft

...I think I'd go square.

NO. I think I'd go buy some more fencing!
