I realize this is a subject that has been beaten and battered over the years..previously when we were in the NE we had sand (construction) in both coop and run. Loved it.
is putting sand down on red clay in run a no no? It will only be half rooved. I just feel wood chips is messy and smelly after time.

I agree wood chips do smell and get yucky after a while. But I use straw and my chickens love it 😍

I've never used anything other than wood chips and my run doesn't stink at all and is bone dry with a solid roof over it.
I've never removed anything, only added more wood chips.

Even with exposure to rain and snow my run never stinks and I never 'clean' it.
Coarse wood chippings with an occasional addition of dry leaves has composted all the poops for 10 years here.
