Hi all! I am new to raising chickens and had a question about the run i built. I've had my 5 island reds and 1 plymouth rock for a week now. I think i have the coop squared away but was wondering about cleaning the run. It is 10 foot by 8 foot and currently what used to be part of my yard is the floor of it. I was noticing all the flies today and was wondering what the best approach to the ground is. Does the ground need cleaned? Or spread the wood shavings i am using in the coop? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

i don't know sounds like you have plenty of space. i've never noticed a fly problem in my run but its on top of a hill and stays well drained. Hope somebody gives you the answer your looking for.

Welcome! We have 2 kinds of flies with our chickens - the ones that lay eggs in fresh manure and the ones that lay in old manure. The ones that lay in the old manure, I noticed, feed off of the ones in the fresh manure. So, although I keep my coops clean, I guess it's not a good idea to keep them too clean. Maybe you just don't have the right balance yet. It may sound crazy, but that's what I have observed.
