I'm trying to decide doing some sort of roofing over the run such as galvanized metal or corrugated plastic or doing something like hardware cloth or netting. Our coop is at the tree line of our property. I'm not really concerned about large predators like racoons, possums, or foxes due to us having 2 large dogs. There is a owl somewhere close by. I live in upstate SC. Should i worry about protecting the run from rain and snow?

How wet does the run get? Rain and snow can blow in from the so a solid roof doesn't keep a run perfectly dry but it can help. Is the roof sloped? If it is not a solid roof will leak with water sitting on top.

It is in a tree line. Leaves will pile up on top. Netting may not be strong enough to support those leaves. How wide is the span? How tall is it? Netting with wet leaves on top may sag a bunch. If you don't support it hardware cloth could sag too. I'd want to be able to walk in there.

This is what we did. PVC covered in HWC. Obviously it does not stay dry but keeps most everything out. Have to blow it off with the leaf blower in fall and knock the snow off. It’s no where near perfect but works

The area the run is at will get rain like everywhere else in our yard, but it doesn't puddle. I don't know for sure if the roof will have a slope or not. It probably will. I can't remember the measurements right now and I am at work and unable to check the dimensions. It's a medium size run though.

Plan to make it have a slope, even a slight one will help it shed water.

You don't get snow like I do, but you will have leaves pile up on it. I use a push broom to pull the snow off my run roof in the winter, and any leaves that accumulate in the fall.
