we are getting 5 chickens and need to know how bog of a run we should build. 5 is the max we are allowed to have

A general rule of thumb is 10 sq ft per chichen. But the bigger the better. If you can give them more, do it.

Do the regulation state maximum size? Sometimes they do. If so, build to the maximum. Otherwise go for at least 10sqft per bird, with consideration for shade being present somewhere in the run at all times.

we are trying to find a dog run then mod it so far we have found an 4x4 and 8x 10 and a 10x10 run. we are only allowed 5 chickens so we cant add to them but want then to be happy ")

I would go no smaller than 10x10, even with just 5 chickens. You'll never regret giving them more space - prevents a lot of problems.
