I'm currently creating plans for a new coop and run (in fact my first chicken experience).
I am planning on having 6 chickens, 3 RIR and 3 Barred Rocks. The coop I'm planning is
4'x5'. I had planned to situate the coop in a fenced area that is 10 x 16 feet. I'm realizing
this is getting to be a bit expensive and if I could make the run a bit smaller, that might be
a bit more financially feasible. My question is for 6 birds, what is a comfortable area the birds
would require yet....keeping it as small as possible... if that all makes sense. Thanks very much
for the suggestions.

Hi,

There is a ton of good information here if you do the search. Coop size recommendations for non bantams is 4 sq ft / bird and run recommendations are 10 sq ft / bird. Good luck.

They spend more time in the run, that's where I would put my $$$....and I would cover the run, nothing worse than wet poop! Just my opinion:)
