"One disappeared shortly after birth. To this day I don't know what happened to him. Another got very sick and died shortly after the first disappeared." She sighed. "Then when Ripple and his brother Knox were two weeks old, the two of them were playing on the bank of the river. Knox was chasing Ripple and lost his footing. He slipped down the bank and fell into the water and he drowned before I could reach him." A few silent tears fell down her muzzle. She had never spoken of this to anyone, not even Ripple.

Destoe didn't know why but he hugged her, and said "No mother should have to outlive her pups."
 
Ripple loped into the densite carrying two rabbits and a squirrel. He dropped them on the fresh kill pile and ran over to Suski and Destoe. His expression became confused when he saw Suski's tear streaked muzzle. "What's going on?" He asked with narrowed eyes.
