Scarlet smiled, and crept up behind the herd. She leaped out of the grass, startling the herd into a stampede. She singled out the old one, separating it from the rest.

Mari hurried in, and grabbed Summer.  "Boys, listen." She said sternly to the male pups.  "We are going on an adventure, Ok?  You need to stay close by mommy and daddy, and be very quiet." 
Faolen smiled and wagged his tail, looking at his brother excitedly. 
Sierra's jaw dropped. "Why?!" She said.  
Mari came out of the den. "That is our business, unless.... unless you want them to know Aki." She said through Summer's fur.

Gray bounded out of the den. "Where are we going?" He yapped.
"No!" Aki looked at West, "you don't need to get involved with this." He paused looking at the heart broken young wolf.
"But...but...but Aki....." west didn't know what to say, Aki had been like his father, he didn't want him to leave.
"West, you will have an important job when I leave...." he looked at the two young wolves. "I want you to take over as the beta." Aki smiled gently. Then picked up Tala, nudged gray and padded into the forest.

"Can we go hunting?" She yipped, springing around him excitedly

Mari smiled lovingly at Sierra. "We'll miss you all." She said, her voice soft with sadness.
Faolen bounded along behind his mother.
"Good bye." Sierra said after them, her voice cracking with sadness.
 
Behind a bunch of ferns where no one could see her, Senkah sat, watching Mari and Aki with cold eyes. She had changed.

Aki trotted along carefully through the rocky forest. "This way." He mumbled around Tala. He slowly picked his way down a craggy hill.


West lowered his head and then threw it back, howling a sad goodbye.
 
"About as loyal as a fox," Senkah thought, growling, "they didn't deserve to live anywhere near Stonepack."
