I have been observing my Runner Duck for the past week or so and I believe she has stopped laying so I thought I’d come and ask for some advice.
She’s just over a year old and is usually a very strong layer. She hasn’t taken a ‘break’ from laying since she started (perhaps the odd day here and there) but Runners usually stop laying in the colder months (we’re in the UK).
We only have our Runner (Peaches) and a Drake who we believe is a Cayuga (or a mix of) plus two hens and a cockerel.
The black birds had been stealing the eggs, often leaving the shells but I was able to get to them first on most days. I have been checking multiple times a day but no eggs for at least a week!
Peaches did have a few soft eggs a few weeks back but since increasing her calcium that seemed to sort it self out and normal egg production resumed.
I’ve checked for signs of being egg bound but I can’t see anything significant.
That’s all the information I can think of, hopefully one of you wonderful people have some advice- thank you in advance 😊

if you only have one girl to the one drake theres a good chance shes being overmated. causing stress. stress is a big factor on egg production. i just had a big bad misfortunate event myself in which forced all 50 of my hens to stop laying. when it comes to eggs ducks need 3 things. sun, food, stress free environment.

Thankyou- we have considered if she is a mix too as they were both meant to be female runners but we figured out quite quickly that Bowser most certainly wasn’t a runner!!
Plans to get some more females are definitely in the works (what a shame we have to get more ducks!!!😉)
I will try and find some more pictures of Peaches if anyone has any guesses as to what she may be crossed with? - I’d be very greatful! 😊
Thanks again!

my guess would be a buff duck mixed with cayuga.

In this Pic she has the runner stance, but she's more round than runners tend to be. But, it doesn't matter. Right? 🩷

Besides not laying, how is she acting? Any other concerns?

And, yes, more ducks is always a good answer. :celebrate

I think that is why we have struggled to identify whether she is a mix breed as she does stand like a runner- she is quite a greedy bugger so that may not be helping! or that she is just a mix breed but it certainly doesn’t matter!
Other than not laying she seems fine in her self, she’s foraging, bathing, swimming, eating, pooing, quacking plenty!

ANY reason to get more ducks is a valid reason!!!

Thanks so much again guys!
