Running loose dogs found in coop yesterday

I see no reason to not shoot on sight. Your daughter has already been threatened. Your animals are threatened. You have been more than patient.

X2 You've already talked to your neighbor, so has the marshal, no results & now your daughter has been threatened, don't wait, now it's up to YOU to fix issue, shoot the dogs on sight.

The general rule of the thumb in most states is that it is legal to kill a dog if it attacks a person or domestic livestock. I guess the key word here is "attacks". Unfortunately if a dog just strays onto your property it is typically not a killable offense. I find it odd that 2 stray dogs where in with your chickens but they did not kill any. Did they bite or draw blood? I would for sure have a predator proof coop and run and have them secured when you are away. If stray dogs get onto your property when you are home then you can call authorities. If they attack then shoot to kill.

I suspect by now you know what needs to be done and now you are getting confirmation that you are right in your feelings. Now the hard part is going through with it. It really stinks when other people make their pets your responsibility. Shooting their dog should not be something you should have to do. Wouldn't it be interesting (although I know this would never happen) if the dogs were picked up again and they were forced by a judge to shoot their own dogs? I think that would be sweet justice. Make them do what they are trying (through their inaction) to make you deal with.

I agree with the others. I'd personally do the "SSS"...shoot, shovel, shut up and be done with it. Next time the dogs come by, you could have a lot of losses, not to mention if your children's safety is an issue...i'd especially have no problem killing the dogs. If the owner doesn't want to lose her dogs, she needs to pen or tie them up and make sure they don't get loose...but sounds like she's had MORE than enough time to get that done. People like that shouldn't even own animals.

Yes they have had plenty of time to fix the issue. 4 the birds we were very lucky that none of the chickens where hurt, I checked each one of them very thoroughly . I don't feel we would be lucky next time. The girls & boys have a fenced run they range all day until dark, then they go in their coop and I lock them up at night. Haven't seen the dogs and haven't had so much as a apology from the owners, doesn't surprise me. I guess I can't understand if I can keep my 75 lb American bulldog under control , well like stated after the dogs were taken away last summer they should not have gained them back. But you all have helped us not feel so bad about the step that will be when they come back on the land, my pink lady will be waiting . Just dumbstruck after the Marshall told them what havoc the dogs caused in the county that day , I guess I am the kind of person that would want to apologize to my neighbors and make sure it didn't happen again. ?

I had the same issue. I told the dogs owner that since I had lost several birds the their dog(their child told mine at school their dog killed our birds) that from now on ALL dogs that werent mine and were lose on my land were to be shot on sight. The dogs have not been seen since thank goodness, but you must protect your critters and kids. Just use a 22 if you are a good shot a 12 gauge if not so good dont make it suffer.

I have both, but more comfortable with my .22 I will only use my shotgun for that prize buck this coming fall ;)

You use a shotgun on deer? Really? I have never heard of anyone doing that.

That's probably because you are in Idaho where a shotgun would not be effective. I am in Southeast Michigan and here we can not use rifles. During gun season my choice is a muzzleloader or shotgun. Shotguns (12 gauge rifled slug barrel) are effective out to about 150 yards. In Michigan most shots on deer are within 100 yards. I have a couple of spots I hunt where I use 00 buckshot, 30-40 yard shot maximum. I shot a coyote 2 years ago in this spot, 40 yards 00 buckshot and dropped her in her tracks. That one won't be coming back to check out my chicken dinners again!
