only the shadow knows.....
Here are some new pics of some of my 11 week olds. I think I have some roos in the bunch!! Will those of you who are a little more chicken/roo savy than myself let me know for sure. I've already passed off 3 Wynadot roos to someone down the road. No one ( other than the Wynadot boys) have started to crow yet. So far out of 12 chicks, looks like I may have 7 or 8 roos. Guess those are your chances when you go for straight run. Anyone know who to tell with cochins? I'm not really sure with mine and they won't stay still long enough to take pics!! I work such crazy hours I don't get to spend much time with my feathers as I did the older ones. They don't come to me like the "Big Girls" do.

Ok this is Fudge Swirl, aka Fudge. Like the ice cream! He's a red sexie. That's what he looked like when he was just a chick. I think this one is most definately a roo. He came from a batch that was suppose to be all pullet chicks!

This one is Hawk my EE. I'm not real sure if Hawk is a pullet or a roo-let! So much easier to tell with a single comb!!

This is Too Shy. S/he has just really started hanging out with everyone else. Was really reclusive until lately now s/he is out there with everyone else. Beautiful Partridge Rock (?)

Now these pics are a mix of a few different birds. In here you can clearly see Fudge, Hawks and Shy's tails in the air. Along with of the RIR roos. In the foreground of the 1st pic is a Black Giant. Possible roo too.

Geez! Who would have thunk it!! I'm just hoping I get at least 1 or 2 more pullets out of the 12. So far I know I have 1 Golden Laced Wynadot and a possible Black Giant pullet.

Now here's the had part.

Which roo do you keep? Hubby likes Fudge. I love Hawk and Shy. I've only got room for 16-20 birds (no heat in my coop, extra bodies for warmth in winter) Already have 5 "big girls" and 2 Hamburgs, 2 Silver laced Wynadots and 2 Buff Orphs are joining the group tomorrow.

Lets see... Fudge is a red sex link, Hawk and Shy are Easter Eggers (who possibly carry the blue/green egg color gene).

I'd probably pick Shy, since he's the most uniquely colored one. His dark coloring appeals to me and I've not seen one with those colors. I have an EE roo colored like Hawk, he's pretty but your basic wheaten or brown/red coloring. I've had red sex link boys too, they're pretty also but they're white and white stands out against the woods and surrounding landscape - easy target when you free range birds.

Edited to add: Shy will probably intermingle more once the other two guys are gone. I bet he's one of those tall, dark, handsome, shy, silent types that the ladies will absolutely love once they get to know him better.

Only problem is, none of those 3 seem to have any protective roo-ish behaviors like I have seen one of the RIR roos. The RIR is out there in the face of the others. These 3 tend to back away, Shy avoids all confontation.

RIR, in my opinion, are a lot more aggressive than the easter eggers or the sex-links. Is your RIR older or bigger? It's typical for the younger boys to stay out of the way because they rank lower on the pecking order. That will change as they get older. At eleven weeks, the hormones haven't started kicking in yet.

O my gosh Thats weird what type of chicken is that red hen.... with white freckles i have a hen that looks the same also umm the one with the white and redish black i have one that looks like that too:lol:
