Sad dove?

I have a blonde pied dove named Ernie that is always being attacked by my 2 females. Every time he gets attacked he starts making a very strange sound from his throat. It kind of sounds like he's crying,but I don't think doves can cry. He only makes this sound if he gets attacked or if he is rejected by a specific dove he is trying to impress.
