sad hens or sad owner?

i started out with 6 chicks, 3 orpingtons and 3 rhode island reds in march . . one by one they dissapeared leaving no trace of forced entry or tracks from a predator. i live inside city limits but know all my neighbors for years. i tried again with 6 more and the same thing happen. i have one left so i found a lady to give me 3 of hers and i secured my pen and set watch, i grew up around chickens and have done everything right but the 4 i have seem sad all the time is that even something a chicken can be ? or could someone or something be messing with them. ?

What kind of behavior are they exhibiting that you interpret as being sad? I think it's a good bet that they are aware of a predator in their midst and are acting wary.

I agree with teamchaos, I would check their coop for any way for a predator to enter
