I am so sorry for your loss. This almost happened to us. When they came out of the coop and were staying in the yard all day. We found them looking thru the fence just inches away from the door. I guess we all know they are not famous for brains....... So we put a pan where the irrigation comes on during the night on the lawn so it always has some water in it. Maybe there is somewhere in your yard that catches regular water? outside of the run/coop. We also put out the left overs on the lawn by this water source. They never seem to go back into the coop during the day, no matter what.
Don't blame yourself. You are a good chicken herder!

So sorry to hear of this. I would also feel terrible, but remember, we all make mistakes. Being sick, it is so tough to take care of everything we normally do. Hang in there.

I am sorry also that this happened.
Thank you for caring enough to post. You have probably saved somone else from the same fate.............

I'm sorry. Thank you for sharing as I think a lot of us forget that the chickens don't have the same smarts as other animals.

This is so sad, but thank you for sharing. As a new chicken owner, I find this to be an eye-opening story. Since the chickens know how to go to roost in the coop at night, I would have assumed they know how to return from the extended run to the original run. I will keep your experience in my mind while designing and building.
Get well soon.

It was made more "real" this morning when I only heard one rooster crowing and I am used to two

I guess it only gets worse when I go out later and get only one egg

I know I should stop beating myself up over this but it is hard to know that something I did caused them to die...................

I have been reevaluating my coop setup to make sure they have plenty of ways in and out and I have a few plans for when I get better, hopefully sometime this week. I have missed two days of work now, that is more than I have missed in a row in 8 years at my current job, actually I looked back at my records and I have had 4 call in days total in 8 years lol. I work as an EMT on an ambulance service and I pride myself on being the go to work kinda guy and this is KILLING ME sitting at home lol.

I will be building my new "chicken compound" sometime before the fall which will be about 40X40 covered run and a 12x20 coop, brooder, and food storage area. I now have 3 younger chickens (about 6 months old, 14 chicks that I am pretty sure are 12 pullets and 2 roos, and 3 turkey poults.
