It hasn't stopped raining, and the ground where it will go is too wet to walk/build on right now.

DH waited too long to start.

well, I am supposed to get Chantilly around Thanksgiving weekend, but I don't think it's fair to her to make her live in a dogloo w/o a run over the winter. sob

I was just kicking myself for not starting another coop. Of course, your rain has been coming here! Another problem, I haven't decided if I want it portable or not. If it's not - I've got the same problem you have - mud!

If it was portable, I could try to start it in the carport. There's not a lot of room but maybe I could stay out of the rain and get it started (done).

What about that? Could your DH work on a portable coop somewhere protected and move it into place later? Could you revamp your building plans to deal with an Oreegone Autumn?

I think the problem is going to be the age of my chicken and the lack of a safe run, rather than the throwing together of a temp coop.

I refuse to compromise on her safety and happiness, especially in winter when I probably won't be able to be out there much.

Our idea of using a 10 x 7 Redi-shed was so that I would be warm when I spend time out there in winter. If I can't do that, they will be alone too much I think.

Yeah, 10 by 7 is a little large to move around the yard.

I only have 3 or 4 hens at a time. These young'ns complain to me every time I go down the back steps. "Want out! Want out!"

If it's raining they really don't want out but I try to have a tiny snack for them each time just to keep them entertained. I gotta say that they probably get more from each others company than they gain from me, if we don't count the calories.

My idea for something new isn't as big as you are planning. Even the old coop isn't either. Large enuf for 3 hens, pair of Coturnix quail and pigeons in the past - or, 4 hens currently. It has a "sunporch" instead of a run.

thanks Beardy... he's working on our screenplay all spare time. To be fair, he recently did re-side most of the house!

LOL we are still building and working in the rain. Here in Oregon you have too. We just put the screw gun in a plastic bag to protect it...cut as fast as we can when the rain slows or stops with a skill saw.

I am a wussy about being wet and cold so I must admit I wear my hunting gear while working outside to stay warm and dry. Plus DH does most of it; when it gets to nasty out he sends me inside. I have no garage or any place dry to cut...tho I thought of using the goat shed to do the cutting but goats are way to curious to stay out of my way while doing it.

It been dry today where I am...hubby has been out trying to fix the latest coop for a couple of chickens that are coming around thanksgiving while there is a break in the weather.

I also have local teenagers (some our ours lol) that will do about anything for $20 bucks. Nothing like cheap easy labor.....and they don't seem to mind the weather at all. Bribery anyone? ROFLOL
