We had so much fun raising our chicks in our basement last winter. They hatched Dec 2 last year, their mother died of a virus, so we brought them in and they became OUR babies. They finally joined the flock last spring but for some reason must've been irresistable to predators, because they dissapeared one by one til we only had two left...our Jack Frost cockerel, and one pullet, Razzle. Today we went outside and surprised a Sharp-Shinned hawk. It had just killed Razzle. She was pretty big, and it was a small hawik, but I guess that made no difference. Just feeling bad, and needing to vent.

Thanks for listening.

Sorry to hear that your Thanksgiving has been spoiled.

Try to remember that your birds had a wonderful life while they were with you. They were lucky to have you taking care of them.

Hate to hear someone else had a crappy thanksgiving. On my post about my snowy calls this a.m. I had to vent b/c I had a snowy girl named "Sissy" who was just a joy to me. As a general rule, our birds here are for sale and for food...so when one becomes a pet, it's safe, and we don't have many pets, needless to say. Well, my oldest dane girl killed her a mnth ago when she somehow got out of the pen, but she had JUST started laying eggs & I had 6 of them. Yesterday 4 babies hatched, 2 girls & 2 boys (1 was rotten & 1 had broken 3 weeks ago) and I was just SO proud to have her babies! I helped them out & cuddled with them & got up & checked on them all night while I checked on my 13 mnth old daughter whose running a fever of 102.2* and then this morning I come in from letting all the adults out & my 3 yr old daughter let my collie out of her room and her evidentally ate all 4 of the babies before I got back in.
I was devistated. So now I have nothing left from Sissy. I bawled my eyes out like a baby. So, I can totally relate to your bad day

Yea, Chickens are cool...but to me, the ducks just are 'it'

And I have really fallen for the snowy calls. I think every one has their 'it' bird, and now I am down to one snowy call female that I hatched out a month ago from a bunch of eggs I got from Fl, and her name is Dumplin' so, she will be guarded...trust me

My chicks haven't hatched yet and I still guard that bator with my lfe. My cat likes to come and climb on top of it and I will throw him off. (Sounds mean but he is a cat, he's got 9 lives...well...maybe 2 left
