I haven't been all to active here, but I told people if anything major happened with my ducks I would let people know.

Particularly because of my Abacot being a rare breed, people were interested in buying fertile eggs and just hearing about her as they hadn't had many opportunities to talk to people about the breed.

A couple of days ago a fox took a wonder into our pens (which are surrounded by high electric fences) in broad daylight and took a few chickens and unfortunately my Khaki Campbell was found dead just outside the safety of her house, had she made it into there she would have survived.

I managed to round up the obviously shocked Abacot only to find she herself had taken a huge bite to the chest. After having it seen to and all sealed shut we moved her to somewhere we could keep an eye on her. With which the flies also decided to take interest in her, and in this heat its been near impossible to keep them away from her. She lay an egg yesterday and we thought we were on the road to recovery but unfortunately this afternoon she passed away through a mixture of stress, shock, injury and the flies had managed to infect her wound despite all the treatment we gave her.

I'm sorry for such a negative post. I would probably have not bothered to mention it here but as some people had taken a really keen interest in my ducks, it seemed only fair.

So r.i.p to my little girls Patty and Selma

I'm so sorry to hear of your losses. Hugs

I really thought when she lay that huge healthy looking egg that we were heading in the right direction. I was already prepared for the worse because of the wound and knowing birds don't do well with shock but I'm still disappointed by the out come :(

I'm sure you are. I know I would be. Did you ever figure out how the fox got into your electric fence?

Yeah we were there when he pottered on over...Jump a clear 2 feet over the fence did his thing then left.

We spotted a new dog fox in the area the other day, absolutely monster of a size. Every other fox has looked at our fence and gone "nah mate not today, far to high!" but this beast leapt in and out without any hesitation or any effort that matter. While I dislike him for what he did, he is still an impressive specimen of a fox. I haven't seen him before last week so I'm thinking he might be a new face that's moved in and was probably scouting out his new area. He hasn't been back since.

I could try but I don't imagine it would help much, both my ducks were female.
It's been near impossible to find a male Abacot to go with her.
