We are feeling a bit sad tonight...

In April we ordered 6 chickens and on a whim we decided to add two female pekin ducks. We got them, loved them, they grew and soon we found out that one of our females was actually a male. A few weeks back he started coming after me and my kids. Now this past week he started attacking 2 of my bantam girls. We found our Drake with the our bantam by the throat numerous times.

We decided it was time to find them a new home :hit a friend of a friend who has 8 ducks, 2 geese, and 16 chickens took them. My 6 year old daughter cried the full hour it took to drive home. Our chickens and ducks are strictly pets (literally we don’t even eat eggs). So it stinks to see them go. I’m sad they won’t be treated as great and spoiled like they were here.

Anyway, anybody else get super attached to their chickens/ducks? I honestly love them as much as I love my dogs.

Sricher91,

Sorry you are going through this. At one time or another we all have to face the reality of rehoming or dispatching our poultry. It is part of being a responsible pet owner. I used to name all of my poultry but it was harder to let them go when they were past laying age.
I still have ducks and chickens and l do spoil them rotten, but l know that they are not going to be around as long as my dogs or cat.
It is always difficult having to let a pet go, but if the drake was that aggressive, especially toward you and your children. you had to let them go.
I must admit that my ducks and chickens have separate runs and houses so the two never come in contact.
Again l am sorry that you had to say goodbye to your ducks.

Thank you. All of animals free range, so they do come in contact with each other unfortunately. We only have chickens now and will probably keep it that way until we have more land.
