My 9 month old Australorp rooster is not an aggressive boy but he is causing a lot of damage to his girls, two Australorps and now just one Orpington. I had a Buff Orp torn to the bone both sides a few weeks ago and had the vet put her down, now the cuckoo Orp is torn too, a V shaped tear about two inches long and 1/4 inch deep. I have brought her indoors, cleaned with Betadine and stitched it - not at all well - sprayed with Betadine aerosol powder, applied a light adherent dressing and wrapped the unhappy girl in Vetwrap bandage. I go away for a week on Friday and my daughter is happy to nurse her, but afraid she'll die while I'm away.

She had been wearing a canvas saddle as she is the one they all peck, but it obviously wasn't big enough to protect her sides. I have today bought bigger leather saddles to put on the other girls. How long are they supposed to wear them? 24/7 for weeks or months, or should they be taken off regularly? I wonder if duct tape would protect them better from their magnificent man? They are in a 3 foot by 5 foot house at night and have free run of my 1/4 acre orchard by day, and are generally a pretty relaxed bunch.

The roos will get a favorite and end up tearing her up. I leave my saddles on 24/7. They dont mind it a bit, and it surely saved their lifes! Good luck!

The first saddle I put on my girl, she had a bare back, and she is just starting to get a little stubble and that was 2 months ago, So I am hoping in about a month from now she will have some feathers back there
