Safe to eat? Photos included

Hi guys! I cracked open some of my chicken’s eggs to make for breakfast today and noticed there were some red specs on all of the the yolks. Are these still safe to eat or should I toss them out? Thank you!

Hi, welcome to BYC!

There are two types of those spots that can happen. One is called blood spots and the other is meat spots. They happen in commercial eggs too but their candlers are so much more precise they are identified and put in commercial products instead of sent to consumers for table use. You can check the incredible edible egg web site or google even to see the difference between meat and blood spots and their cause if it's important to you.

They are perfectly safe, just a little ugly. I either use them as is, pick the specks out, or feed it back to my animals. And I also educate any of my consumers who haven't had farm fresh eggs before as some will THINK that's a chick forming even though the eggs may not be fertilized.

Several years back I was too grossed out to eat ANY non white shell colored eggs!

They won't likely all have those spots forever. It's just an occasional hiccup. Though some girls may be more prone than others.

Those little blood spots are put there by your hens. They are to remind us, of how much sacrifice goes into that egg, so that we can have that delicious breakfast, eggs for fluffy cakes and cookies, salads, sandwiches...
