I have 2- 5 wk old rouen ducks and bring them in to stay in the shower (bed) at night. I leave food and water available at all times. wonder if it would be ok to keep food out. in hopes of lessening the gifts on paper in the morning. Also should grit be available and how much is too much for them. I'm new at this.I'm still at the sizing stage of diapers.......but they keep growing :) this is Doodles and Dandy

Doodles and Dandy are adorable, and Welcome to BYC

Yes at 5 weeks you can take food up and they will be fine over night, grit they should have available any time there is food available and in a separate bowl so they can use as needed.

Thanks so much for the quick reply. I'd read somewhere that they tend to overeat the grit so wasn't leaving it down, just hand feeding it occasionally to monitor intake. Am I correct in thinking that they get grit from the sand in the soil? we are in Fl. so sand is available. I'm just now learning what a crop is. was worried when I saw the large lump on it's neck. Thought the diaper might have been too tight.
oh my, sleepless nights ahead till they are grown.

Just like a new mom. Yes they can get grit for sandy soil. I leave grit out all the time even though mine forage daily they seldom eat it other than winter when it's snowed or icyy.
