I have 3 chickens, a red star, an ISA brown, and a black australorpe. About 2 months ago I noticed white rice-like worms protruding from the poop. I immediately treated for 5 days with Safeguard 10% (3 cc per gallon of water) and then treated again 10 days after finishing the first 5 days. I decided to try another round of the Safeguard and finished the 5 days on Friday. i don't know whether to repeat it again after 10 days or not. While they were on the last 5 days, I noticed the poop was looking normal except for the worms. Now that they are off of it, the poop has become runny and dark brown. The Safeguard water was the only water available to them and I know they were drinking it. After both treatments, I still noticed the worms. Either I'm administering it incorrectly, these are not tapeworms, or they are resistant to the Safeguard. I have called every vet in our area and no one works on chickens so any suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated.

Adding Safeguard to water is ineffective treating worms as I've found out years ago. I've dealt with tapeworms, and Safeguard will not treat them. Even Valbazen is showing some resistance.
I recommend that you purchase Equimax equine paste and orally dose birds that are showing segments in feces. Dosage is 0.15ml for a 5 pound hen. Redose in 10 days. The praziquantel in the horse wormer will kill the tapeworms.

Thanks for you help. I will find out where to get it and get some. Do you by any chance know if there is an egg withdrawal period for the EquiMax?

At least in cats and dogs, panacur (fenbendazole) only treats certain species of tapeworms, none of which are very common in cats and dogs. I suspect not chickens either.

Praziquantel is the best it also works on fish for digenetic nematodes
