Thanks for the additional great comments and ideas! Yes, maybe I've gotten old enough and seen too much, but I'm pretty cynical about her long-term chances for success with this placement of her coop and run. I sent an email last night explaining the merits of "emotional signage" and the need for secure fencing, and she wrote right back saying she'd run into the local sheriff and gotten him to take an interest in her project! Seems he grew up on a farm and thought that was a great idea to share her vision with a front yard coop -- and that he'd make it a point for he and his deputy on patrol to check up on her.
Teenagers who get into "one-upping" each other and who get bored are probably her biggest threats, but thievery is also an unfortunate by-product of such a terrible economy, so it will be interesting to see if she can make this work. Involving her immediate neighbors would probably also go a long way towards having extra sets of eyes on the coop and run to report any mischief.
i wish her good luck with her project. Very cool that local law enforcement are offering support. Maybe you can help her post pictures when it's completed? Would love to see what she creates.
