Salem VA new ordinance vote June 11

I just heard from a friend in Salem who will be attending the meeting with her husband. The council has threatened to ban all chickens if they try to get the media involved. Crazy. This makes me sick.

Regarding the meeting on Monday June 11, 2012 and City Council threatening to ban all chickens if media gets involved. I'm not sure who told you this, but they are misguided. Media has been involved. In fact, there is an article in this week's local paper, the Salem Times Register, about it.

Quoting the article: "In an informal poll, the five members of Salem City Council indicated they believe the city is on the right track with the three-and-a-half page ordinance, but they are reserving judgement until after the public hearing June 11, they said.
As a work session before the May 29 council meeting, council and Deputy Zoning Administrator Mary Ellen Wines discussed possible changes to set backs and distances from neighbors posed in the zoning amendment. Assisant City Manager Jay Taliaferro said the public hearing will be on the ordinance as presented and advertised, and if council members want to propose any changes, they would be able to do so after hearing from the public."

So, not sure who you're talking to, but they've got their facts wrong. Yes, this ordinance needs some work, but it is a step closer towards making chickens truly legal in Salem, VA. This has been an issue we've been dealing with for over four years now.
We're encouraging Salem residents to come out and share their thoughts and opinions and allow Council members a chance to hear from them.

That is not quite the media and outside representation I was talking about. This is the council/government side of the story, imo. The person I heard from is the wife of a former candidate for the House of Representatives, business owner, and chicken owner. They are very upset about another invasion into personal property rights. The mayor was overheard saying that he didn't want to live next door to the smelly creatures and that they decrease property value. If I am understanding you correctly, you support the new proposed restrictions? May I ask what it is you support? Thank you for your response.

You mean, Salem residents. THIS is what my source meant by outside opinions. They (Salem council) do not want this to be public, keep it as quiet as possible. That is the way government works.
