Salinomycin in feed, can I hatch the pullets eggs?

Hi all,

Last time I bought grower feed the store didn't have my regular unmedicated feed but told my they had another brand just the same so I bought that. Turns out it ISN'T unmedicated, it has Salinomycin in it and warnings not to feed it to layers.

Well I just found my first 3 eggs and don't want to eat them now.

Would it be ok to incubate them? I'd be looking to incubate everything from now till the end of the withholding period. They are small but I know there is a good chance they are fertile as the cockerels in the pen are active. I just wondered if the Salinomycin would affect the developing chicks.

I don't want to waste these first eggs but I have enough health issues and intolerances/allergies I'm not going to entertain the idea of eating them myself.

Darn it! I wanted unmedicated for a reason!

I'd never neard of this drug so did some research. It is used for cocci preention. Evidently if fed beyond 10 weeks it reduces weight gain, at least in broilers. I could find nothing anywhere about hatchability of egg, so in your shoes I would try it; not much to lose.

From what I could find, there is a rapid decline int the salinomycin when discontinued. They say a 3 day withdrawal on eggs....which means if it concerns you, to not eat the eggs for three days after you stop using the feed. Google: salinomycin in eggs.

That link is very interesting, I hadn't found that study when I was searching. Just delighted it also reduces weight gain.

Especially since my young cockerels are eating it.

3 days is pretty fast withdrawal so that's good. My bag doesn't actually say what the withholding period is.

Looks like I'll be able to eat the eggs after the weekend, I'm off to pick up feed today. I was going to get some local till I read the tag and it's only 14% protein.

I'd have taken it back but I filled the feed hopper and they've eaten 3/4 of the bag already before I realized.

Has taught me to make sure I read the bag, not trust the store workers. Can't get complacent about what they are eating.
