Sally's GF3 thread

Has anyone heard of using stainless steel to get the smell of onions or garlic off your hands? I guess they sell smooth little steel cakes or nuggets to rub on your skin to take the smell off.

I mentioned having made toum to one of my neighbors who is a very good cook and used to teach cooking, and she said that technique does work. She uses a spoon, and says it works for taking the odor out of your mouth too.

I tried it last night, and it did seem to help. Later, I could still taste garlic on my breath, but much less.

I am not going to have toum before lunch today. The guys from Your Shower Door are coming to measure for the shower door, and I don't want to drive them away with my breath. :)

Happy news. The guy from Your Shower Door said that everything in our shower was good to go. Very slight slope to the drain, very slight slope on the lip into the basin, and those are ideal. I told him that there is 3 1/2" (wide side of a 2x4) on one wall to attach to, and the plumbing wall is still open on the other side, so you can see what's there (plenty).

These doors weigh roughly 75 pounds apiece. So glad these guys are responsible for delivery and installation.

Did they schedule?

Yes! October 29th. Two weeks from Tuesday, we will be shower curtain-less!
:wee
Right now, we have a janky work around for the curtain rod.

The other end is screwed into the wall, not the shower wall. Hubby ran this end of the shower wall out as far as he could, so that there wouldn't be any possible gaps. He'll devise a nice finish over the 2x4 and the edges after the door is in.

There are bricks sitting on the bottom of the shower curtain to keep it in place. Cleanest bricks in town!:gig

I pickled some cucamelons a couple of weeks ago. Refrigerator pickles, so they have to be eaten within a couple of months. I tried one last night. Yeah! Good!

I hope hubby likes them too. He didn't care for the cucamelons when they were fresh; he didn't like the crunchiness of the skin. He peels cucumbers before he eats them, so that wasn't surprising.

We have a chest freezer. It's crammed full of stuff. If whatever you're looking for isn't in view, it's probably made its way down, down, down to the nether regions and is encased in frost.

I took (almost) everything out and found some exciting surprises! And some really old stuff that has started its next life in the compost bin.

We're going to look for an upright to augment this, not to replace it. I'd like to freeze a lot more produce from the garden.

Among the "treasures" I found in the freezer: Lots of cranberries. I buy it around the holidays to make sauce, and get an extra bag. Or two. Or four. Or maybe they multiplied at the bottom of the freezer.

I have lots of cran. What to do with it? Make some kind of jam! What else do I have to make jam? Apples!

I made a batch of cran-apple jam, and it is delicious. I'm going to make some more today, because I really *need* to make space in the freezer. If I get the cranberries turned into jam, the can live in the pantry in the basement. There is space down there.
