I picked up two salmon faverolle chicks they were 5 days old. Today they are 19 days old. I have been looking at chick pics on
this forum and it seems their feathering is behind. Anyway, here are they are. Any input on if these are boys or girls would be great!
Wow your little ones are feathering in much slower than mine. My little ones are just about a week older than yours and are almost fully feathered. I guess it depends on the chick!
I am learning that with hatchery chicks, you can't necessarily go by feather sexing so I may not be right, but your little ones both look like they are pullets to me.
I know! They are in slow motion. I notice feather changes every day but it's taking some time. They are from a local farm just a few miles from me. I have them with a broody silkie. She adopted them in like 10 seconds. When a mama raises them versus being in a brooder, would that interfere with growth? I don't see any pure black feathers, and the brownish color is faint. I can't get over how different they look from other chicks their age? Do you think they are okay?
They act like little chicks. As cute as can be. Very energetic, peep all the time, ride around on mom's back. Poop all over...lol. Yes, they eat chick starter. I had been in contact with the seller since March. He bought a rooster then email me on May 30 to say the chicks hatched. Then on June 2 I picked them up. So I think he emailed me after they were born. At the youngest they are 14 days.
I bet they are just fine. They are just taking their time with growing in those pretty feathers. Maybe Mama Silkie is telling them soft fluff is better than regular 'ol feathers.
Since you got them from a private breeder, I bet yours are more likely to be true to the color sexing method. I really think they are little pullets for you.
I've got some SF that hatched on 6/2. I'll try to get some pics but mine are not much more feathered than your, maybe a little bit more but not much. I too am hoping for ideas on sexing. It's a beautiful day here in Maine and time to clean the brooder anyway so good day for some pics. I hope to check back later today.
