Has anyone noticed that when the SF chicks are first hatched, some have a reddish tinge to their Feathers. I am wondering if I have a rooster in with my other chickens that I did not know was a rooster.

How are they looking now?
They have for the most part lost the reddish tinge. I am waiting to see if they are male or female, should become apparent soon. Still not sure if they are all SF but fairly certain. They sure are cute at this age. I am going to try to transition them to a spare coop that I have with heat lamps before it gets too cold.
Do you have SF chickens? I bought 16 chicks earlier this year. Some of them had scissor beaks. The hatchery said this was not uncommon. The males once they got older did not show any feathers on their wattles which I thought must be normal, but after contacting the hatchery again, she said that the males should have full beards covering the wattles.

The hatchery replaced some of the defective birds with 5 more chicks, two of which also had the scissor beak problem. She said she would contact the owner, but I have not heard back. She said they just culled the defective birds, but the problem is that the defects do not show up util several months later.
This set of birds I incubated and hatched myself so it will be interesting to see if any have the defects. But then what to do with them.

I do! I bought a bunch from Belt Hatchery in February of this year.

One of my Brahmas from Hoover Hatchery has this.

Interesting. Let me see if I can get some pictures of my boys.

Wow, that's crazy! No way they should be selling that many with that defect.

I could tell mine was cross-beaked when it arrived.

Those in the picture are ones you incubated?

Yes, I wanted to see if I still have a rooster posing as a young hen! Ha Ha. In fact I just confirmed today that I do! He will have to go in the "Rooster Jail" until we have time to process the extra roosters. I wish I could rehome them, but most people do not want rooster. They have a bad rap, justified in a lot of cases.

The SF roosters are just wonderful. My husband has bonded with one of the older ones and they both look forward to their morning greetings (consisting of grapes for Tank). Buddy and Tank tolerate me picking them up and giving them a little cuddle. But not when we have company, they do not want to let on that they are such softies.

Becareful breeding known issues with your flock.
Yes, that is why I am getting more than a bit upset with the hatchery, Cackle Hatchery by the way. They seemed to have a good reputation. We will see what they plan to do. I just wanted to quietly alert them to this potential big problem they may have with their Salmon Faverolles, but so far they do not appear to be concerned. The gal I talked with said she thought that the number of defective birds was unusual for one customer.

"Bentley" is much worse now, and has just started crowing.
