i got my two salmon favorelle hens from a feed store (shuu and purin) as chicks for $4 each. when they started feathering, i thought purin was a boy since her feathers were dark around her head and beard. purin ended up having a brown head; hence her name purin. she used to have some black feathers in her beard and cheeks when she was very young, but when she got older they went away. she passed away earlier this spring, and i was looking through old photos of her. why does she have a brown head? i’ve seen other salmon favorelles with brown heads but not many, and my other salmon favorelle, shuu, looks like a classic hen. is purin mixed with something? here are some photos, they aren’t in chronological order but the photos range from when they were a couple months old to the present day.

Salmon is Silver(S/-) based Wheaten(eWh/eWh), The darker appears to be gold(s+/-) based Wheaten Faverolle, The name of the Faverolle color is Mahogany Faverolle

that does look like purin!! i was also wondering about the black feathers in her beard; i’ve noticed that some people say it might be from the environment. what would cause that? or is it natural in mahogany favs? also, are mahogany hens less common? is there any difference in personality ?

I found this thread looking for Mahogany Faverolles. How did your pen do last year? I'd love to see some pictures of offspring if you have any.

sorry i’m late to this question! purin sadly passed away in march 2024, it’s been a hard year without her but all of her friends are doing well. she was almost a year old when she passed suddenly. she was the only mahogany girl; we bought her from the salmon faverolle pen at the store when she was little, so the other chick we got from there was a salmon, and purin was the only mahogany in our flock. i have a mixed flock. hopefully that gives more insight!
