Salmonella - again New CDC Reminder (43 states affected so far)

It can be vaccinated for. You can buy your birds from an NPIP certified breeder (like myself or likely thousands of others), which should be salmonella-free (or at least, symptom free). Once confirmed in your flock, it can be treated with one of a couple medications.

Ultimately, however, salmonella is essentially everywhere in the environment humans have been for any significant period of time with animals.

Healthy animals, and good hygiene, are generally enough, in combination with good management practices to keep salmonella from causing any noticeable issues - in the bird's health, or yours.

Here is what the CDC has to say on the subject. For the vast majority of people infected, a little intestinal infortitude is likely their only symptom - usually because someone preparing food didn't wash their hands after using the restroom. Uncomfortable, unpleasant, but only very rarely more severe than that.

Note that the CDC and the USDA disagree on egg handling - and the EU disagrees with them both. ;) No perfect answers, just different degrees of risk from differing concerns.

Salmonella correct?

I wasn't aware of this ... nice to know.
Yup.

One of the Manufacturers websites

Of course, different forms of salmonella, different vaccines...

Most focus on buying clean birds, sound management practices once they have their birds, and good hygiene when handling birds (and after), rather than multiple vaccinations - which aren't perfect. Because nothing ever is.
