Salt Test Fail

What's going on is the salt environment you created takes so much time to stabilize. It's why you wait 6 hours or until the humidity reading is steady.

A salt test is used to calibrate your hygrometer. Not many are reading true and I've seen them off as much as 15% RH. It doesn't mean the hygrometer is unusable it only means you add or subtract however much it was off in the salt test to get true readings. For example if your reading after 6 hours was 82 then 75-82= -7. -7 is the calibration, you'd always subtract 7 from your reading to know what the true RH is. There is no need to use another hygrometer. One is all you need with it's calibration # written on masking tape and fixed to incubator as a reminder.

You must not have read my original post....or my follow-up. After 12 hours the hygrometer was reading 71; after 24 hours it was reading 75.

So....had I only tested it for 12 hours (6 more than you recommend), my readings and adjustments after 2-3 days in the incubator would have been off....

I don't quite trust this hygrometer; I'm going with multiples to make myself feel better....It may not make my hatch any better, but I will feel better

That’s so exciting! I’m setting my first ever eggs on the 13th so we can be hatching newbies together! I’m sending good hatching vibes your way! ~~~ (those are good hatching vibes ;))

Hey!! I just realized I got the same temp/hydrometer as you! I just got home with it and I’m testing the temp in my incubator. What brand of incubator are you using?

I'm using a Hovabator Genesis 1588 with turner. This is not my first incubator. I've used this one before with very good results. My original Hova was stolen a few years ago and since then I've relied on my own broodies, but I've got lavender Ameraucana hens with no roo, and I've got Bantam Salmon Faverolles who don't want to set their own eggs, so....back to the incubator.

Oh. My bad  well... good hatching vibes either way. I had the opposite problem a few moths ago lol. I had 4 broodies and no need for any of them. Now, I’ve obviously changed my mind. I’m going to hatch these chicks and sell them to local chicken lovers.

You must not have read my original post....

Oh no, I read it. I just distinguish 24 hours as one day not two and noted you'd not put hours in OP. My point was establishing a salt environment takes time and you wait for the hygrometer to read steady. It looks like yours is reading spot on. Congrats.

You are right. Sorry. I didn't specify in that first post that I had waited 12 hours. My bad.
